Sustainable living does not mean doing without.  Instead, it means doing things differently in ways that preserve our environment, usually with better results.
 
Demonstrating this and educating by example is what ISL is about.

Martha’s Vineyard with fifty active farms, rich ocean harvests and island visitors of means endow the island with elements ISL arranges to preserve family farms, create a vibrant, sustainable food economy, and promote sustainable living principles.

create a market for the island's harvest, and help to educate all of us that sustainable living means doing things more intelligently.

With our anaerobic digester we will reduce the island’s carbon footprint and nitrogen loading of the surrounding land and water while turning manure to methane gas to produce electricity.   Meanwhile, the by-product of the anaerobic digester fuel is a cost-effective fertilizer superior to commercial high-nitrogen fertilizer.  All the while we are preserving family farms, the Vineyard's traditional agricultural community.
